At the March meeting, we met a lot of great new partners…we are looking to make a very special hands-on and interactive presentation at the 2012 Freedom Institute of the Detroit Branch NAACP the 1st week in May. Stay tuned!

Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Conference

The 1st Annual SOGI Education Conference was held at Oakland University on Feb 3 2012. Dr. Amorie Kofi Robinson, Ruth Ellis Center Board Member, and Pamela Hilliard Owens, President of PFLAG Family Reunion Detroit Chapter, were co-presenters at the Conference. It was an awesome success. We met some great LGBT advocates and community partners. We are looking forward to next year’s conference!

Specific Session Feedback via Email

  • The first “A Proactive-Community-Driven Model” provided some history and context for LBGT issues and advocates in the Detroit area. Their organization is specifically to support LBGT people of Color. They are offering professional development for schools, with particular trainings constructed for different educator roles–administrators, teachers, and counselors. The tone was informal, and conversational, which led to questions and conversation. Personally, I plan to contact Ms. Owens about providing some PD in my RDG course at Baldwin :)
