Mrs. Owens is the mother of a wonderful adult openly gay daughter who lives in Portland OR and is a visiting professor of creative writing and poetry. She is a world-renowned poet and author with four books on Amazon. She “came out” as a very young adult (age 19). Until then, Mrs. Owens had “no idea” that her daughter was gay—she had a “regular” teen-age life with boyfriends, cotillion, proms, etc.

PFLAG-FR Detroit works in conjunction with the other Michigan PFLAG Chapters and the National PFLAG organization to be of service to the families of LGBTQ persons of color in Detroit and the surrounding close suburbs. Our chapter is open to all, but we also realize that LGBT families of color have additional cultural issues, and the greater Detroit area is home to many LGBT people of African, Asian, Hispanic, and Arabic descent.

Mrs. Owens, as a PFLAG Mom and Straight Ally, works to help other parents whose children are gay or questioning or have already “come out” to deal with their child’s orientation and any and all ramifications. Mrs. Owens also works with other people who would like to be “Straight Allies” even if they are not directly affect by a gay family member or friend. Many people feel that discrimination against LGBTQ people is just wrong and want to do something—a little or a lot.

Pamela Hilliard Owens is the CEO of (2) Detroit-based writing, editing, and eBook publishing businesses, Writing It Right For You, and Detroit Ink Publishing, LCC. She and her multi-state team of writing professionals work with individuals, businesses, and graduate and post-graduate students in Detroit, the United States, and nine other countries.

I am very sorry that I recieved the email re the meeting yesterday so late. I wanted to know when will be the next meeting so that I can plan to attend and send out the information to others. I am a social worker and someone very interested in recruiting adults who are sympathic to the needs of the LGBQT population.
