Same-sex Marriage in Utah

18 and counting!

As the result of a ruling of the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, Same-sex marriage in Utah became legal on December 20, 2013. Utah, a politically conservative state that has voted Republican in every presidential election from 1968 through 2012, is the 18th state where same-sex marriage has been legalized.

Utah Governor Gary Herbert responded to Shelby’s ruling the same day saying: “I am very disappointed an activist federal judge is attempting to override the will of the people of Utah. I am working with my legal counsel and the acting Attorney General to determine the best course to defend traditional marriage within the borders of Utah.”   Oral arguments in the case are scheduled for April 10, 2014.
